L'Amour Fou de Petits Fours, watercolor, 9" x 11"
Still crazy for petits fours, I thought I'd try out the competition for the sake of variete. Mais quelle disastre! When I opened the box they were all slip slidin' away.
Staff grabbed the box, ran into the kitchen and tried to patch them back together. Unacceptable IMHO :(
Where are the little protective caissettes plissées that go under each petit four bien sur?
Mon dieu! I was mad. I was growling like these amazing not-to-be-missed animal sculptures of Ai Weiwei by The Plaza Hotel.
C'est la vie. I picked myself up off the ground and returned to Financier Pastries for a second set of petits fours.
A pastry artiste has to have something to paint. These are perfection.
As a consolation prize I got a passion fruit macaron = instant happiness. When life gives you lemons eat macarons.
With all this mad, crazy love for petits fours eating me up, seeing L'Amour Fou/crazy love was a natural...
L'Amour Fou is a French documentary about the relationship of Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Berge, their amazing art collection and Berge's decision to auction it off in 2009 in a 3-day extravaganza. Read more about it in Elaine Sciolino's story here.
The film offers an inside look at their lives together and the relentless luxury of their lifestyle.
Yesterday Yellow Bird dragged me down to the Stone Street Financier branch for more pastry luxuries. Who does he think he is - YSL?BONJOUR L'AMOUR FOU de PETITS FOURS!

Financier Pastries Petit Fours, watercolor, 9"x 11"
Drinking too much Champagne at a once-a-year tasting is not that big a problem...
But becoming attached at the hip to a Patisserie with 9 branches just a short train ride away is another matter...
Dear PBers,I need an intervention...
What started out as mere research for a petit four drawing project...
Has turned into a full-blown obsession. Ouch!
I tell myself I'm buying these delights just to paint them. Ha! They're disappearing faster than I can paint them :(
A few years ago I kept pastry temptation under control easily...
I only painted miniatures...
Under an inch high.
Help me PBers.
Years ago I did a portrait business card for Financier's head pastry chef, Eric Bedoucha! Is that why I can't resist his goodies?
What should I do? Especially since I've not yet tasted "Le Tropical". Who doesn't love passion fruit raise your hand. At least I have a remedy for greediness straight from Paris - Oddibil charcoal tablets are specially created for pastry overeaters. I recommend it highly.
BONJOUR Financier Pastries 2!

I'm been going through serious petit four immersion.Really I should be immersed in the pool doing water gym...
I recently discovered the wonderfully French New York patisserie, Financier Pastries. I had to buy their little beauties this past weekend to paint. Here's what's left of the original 16 that arrived home in perfect condition. They come sitting nicely on a presentation plate and they don't jump around...
Unlike the other brand's petit fours. These could have used some heavy plastic surgery once home...
Foodwalker, a professional caterer, asked me if they taste as good as they look.
Petit Four research sketches...THEY DO!
I can fully testify to Financier pastries in particular. They really are mini versions of the grownups in the case. Not like the other brand - mostly just a bit of fruit afixed to a tartelette. I ate the fig-pistachio tarty thing on the far right...
To get in the right frame of mind to see Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris homage to the city of lights. Both were perfection - miam miam
I happened to pass by another Financier shop yesterday to check if their pastries really were as good as I thought they were...They are!
Green and white stripped awnings, lots of French-esque details AND they have macarons.
Their signature pastry is the golden bar-shaped almond 'financier' cake - their first shops opened near Wall street. Chef Eric Bedoucha grew up in Paris, got his training at Dalloyau and it shows.
Some of you have asked about Yellow Bird. I almost called this post 'My Left Foot'. Yellow bird has been recoverying from a foot injury but he's back with a bit of Scotch (tape) to the rescue.

When I devoured this little passion fruit tartelette from Financier Pastries at FlowerSchool NY a few weeks ago, who knew...
Laduree Petit Fours, art at Etsy, 9" x 11"
I spent this week grappling with a Tuna fish sandwich and even more Parisien petit fours? C'est la vie...
Most people waltz into Champs-Elysees Laduree and head straight for the macaron counter. They completely miss the tray of mini petit fours by the cash register, but not me/mais pas moi.
What better way to taste a little bite of everything inhouse Laduree for less calories (like who's counting) and less dough?
These are not those horrid little sugary squares of iced yellow cake we know too well and hate, but mini tastes of framboise and religieuse bite-sized...
I made this astonishing discovery my last morning in Paris. I raced to Laduree and then raced home to shoot different setups of these sweet minis....
Naturelement I had to eat them up before racing off to catch the plane, but they were mostly fruity anyway. *Try not to race around too much when you're bringing these babies home or they'll show serious wear and tear. They ARE delicate.
Fauchon and Gerard Mulot have them too... Labels: Dalloyau, dessert alert, Fauchon, Financier Pastries, FlowerSchool NY, Laduree, petit fours
