carol gillott - Parisbreakfasts Bonjour Les Pates aux Choux, watercolor on Etsy. 9" x 11"

Who isn't captivated by the sheer beauty of French pastry?
But it's what's inside that really counts.
Are you persuaded by just a pretty face?
Any patissiere worth his pates aux choux is very much obsessed by what's inside. Top Parisien patissiere, Carl Marletti shows a luscious cross-section of a religieuse and shares the ingredients in quite an innovative way. Do visit.

The innards of a macaron from Patisserie des Reves' chef Pierre Conticini's cookbook, Sensations. Who knew what mysteries lurked within?
A page from a guide to Pierre Herme's L'Ecole Ferrandi. Herme mentions many times that he'd like to be an architect - but he is, isn't he?A cross section of a piece of cake at Des Gateaux et du Pain...

In my mad pursuit to paint French pastry I nearly fell over in a faint when I discovered this FAB book, called I think, Encyclopedia of pastry dough - 100 kinds of pastry dough and petit gateau (旭屋出版MOOK) Essential reading for professionals and pastry artists.

If only I knew a bit more Japanese besides 'arigato'/thank you...

Wouldn't it be lovely to know the French names of all these yummy ingredients. Any volunteer translators out there?

Financier Pastries Second best to knowing what's inside...

Would be a proper knife to cleanly cut through the pastries. A PBer mentioned Kyocera ceramic knives are the best and I'm getting one today. It's Japanese too...

Financier Pastries Yellow Bird keeps telling me if I had a proper knife I wouldn't make such an awful mess. Hmmm...(shrugs) "c'est la vie".

BONJOUR Inner Life of Pastry!

Before I left Paris I saw the new exhibit of 'The Caillbotte Brothers Private World' at the Musee Jacquemart-Andre.
Well-to-do brothers, Gustave painted while brother Martial took endless photographs, both recording daily quotidienne life in the mid-19th century, opening an intimate window into their priviledged Parisien lives. Each brother visually influenced and mirrored the other's images. *Note this backlite silhouetted figure, the result of the slow view camera... Echoed here in Gustave's painted silhouetted figure at the window...
Just like these two sharply delineated visitors at the musee Jacquemart-Andre...
Two figures from Gustave's famous big painting, 'Paris Street, Rainy Day' in the Art Institute of Chicago, again backlit...
A preparatory etude/study for that painting...
Looking down from the balcon at promenaders dans la rue...
Again silhouetted figures contrasted against a light background.
And Martial's photo...
150 photos of Martial's were recently discovered and are grandly displayed actual size against wall-sized blowups immersing you in the atmosphere of their times...
Lots of eating included, like brother Gustave's petite niece licking out the copper jam cooking pot...
Or the family caught mid-slurp at dejeuner...
I loved all the glass in this 'Dejeuner' painting of Gustave's...
And was inspired to try my hand at some champagne glasses...

The Salon du The at the Jacquemart has terrific desserts. *Note the eaters are backlit on the terrace...

Laduree macaron boxes...what IS it about them..?
Some Laduree boxes, watercolor, 9" x 11"
Can we ever get enough?
Or are you only interested in the contents? They keep changing the boxes with the seasons - these are the new Fall boxes designed by hot shoe designer Christian Louboutin. Get ready to run get some!
Laduree Macaron Boxes - Paris Breakfasts'Course I could look at the old classics all daylong.
The proportions and colors are perfect...
Laduree Macaron Boxes - Paris BreakfastsHmmm...you're thinking about the contents again..I can tell
There's something about the boxes that's captivating...
They have a decidedly Rococo feel to them. Certainly the soft pale colors are very fem. The ribbony
cartouche design was used on old wine labels. It was used on everything in 18th century French design. Doesn't it make us feel a bit like Marie-Antoinette - gobbling cookies and not thinking about the consequences...
Let's eat cake and worry about the regiem tomorrow
Laduree Macaron Boxes - Paris BreakfastsLaduree has some new notebooks and fans to help us feel more like Marie-Antoinette...
Laduree Macaron Boxes - Paris BreakfastsWhy didn't I buy this pretty but impractical green umbrella?
Because I saw it my first day in Paris and you never buy anything on the first day. You tell yourself you'll think about it and come back later... HA! Scenes from my coveted box collection...

Boxed in...

One Laduree box, original watercolor,sold 5" x 7"

Have you been feeling "Boxed in" by the cold weather?
Two Laduree boxes, original watercolor, sold 5" x 7"

Well I have...

It is blankety-blank&*%$ COLD here!!!!

Like 18 degrees + the dastardly wind chill factor?
In my little 10' x 12' Boxy studio, it's fairly toasty...
But if I go out of the room,
it FEELS LIKE ALL THE WINDOWS ARE WIDE OPEN!!!!
FREEZING COLD!
My Friend in San Francisco, Annie, says all her windows ARE wide open!
It's like 80 degrees there!
What?
Oh and don't you know we got SNOW today!
Another reason to stay inside my little Box...ahem

Speaking of Boxes...since the apartment was painted, you know how you get these urges to throw out a ton of stuff? Well the thousand or so Boxes of miniatures...quite a few Boxes have landed on the street, making some finder very happy I hope...
Bye bye little Boxes!
Course I did keep a few...
Oh and yesterday I finally ventured out of my box to mail a bunch of watercolors
(THANK YOU PB readers!!) at the post office.
Don't you know I left them home sitting on my chair!?
Naturally I only realized while on the subway that my bag was rather light.
Quelle bird brain :(

Here's a couple of chocolate Parisien Boxes I wouldn't mind getting delivered..
HOW COLD IS IT WHERE YOU LIVE?

BON CLIMAT!
