carol gillott - Parisbreakfasts Bonjour Les Pates aux Choux, watercolor on Etsy. 9" x 11"

Who isn't captivated by the sheer beauty of French pastry?
But it's what's inside that really counts.
Are you persuaded by just a pretty face?
Any patissiere worth his pates aux choux is very much obsessed by what's inside. Top Parisien patissiere, Carl Marletti shows a luscious cross-section of a religieuse and shares the ingredients in quite an innovative way. Do visit.

The innards of a macaron from Patisserie des Reves' chef Pierre Conticini's cookbook, Sensations. Who knew what mysteries lurked within?
A page from a guide to Pierre Herme's L'Ecole Ferrandi. Herme mentions many times that he'd like to be an architect - but he is, isn't he?A cross section of a piece of cake at Des Gateaux et du Pain...

In my mad pursuit to paint French pastry I nearly fell over in a faint when I discovered this FAB book, called I think, Encyclopedia of pastry dough - 100 kinds of pastry dough and petit gateau (旭屋出版MOOK) Essential reading for professionals and pastry artists.

If only I knew a bit more Japanese besides 'arigato'/thank you...

Wouldn't it be lovely to know the French names of all these yummy ingredients. Any volunteer translators out there?

Financier Pastries Second best to knowing what's inside...

Would be a proper knife to cleanly cut through the pastries. A PBer mentioned Kyocera ceramic knives are the best and I'm getting one today. It's Japanese too...

Financier Pastries Yellow Bird keeps telling me if I had a proper knife I wouldn't make such an awful mess. Hmmm...(shrugs) "c'est la vie".

BONJOUR Inner Life of Pastry!

More snow today and no NYC yellow cabs to brighten the view...
I was thinking how the French own the tarte - this Pain Quotidien tarte is lacking je ne sait quoi when put...
Next to the French version of a framboise tarte...

A New York tarte from Financier Pastries - hmmm, it looks pretty Frenchie...

Parisian Secco's tartelettes...

The French love their REDS...

Count all the touches of RED in this picture...

So why not a touch of RED on these chocolat minis?

Dalloyau does lovely RED tartes...

A no-name Parisien corner patisserie does it right. They make them every day of the week. They get lots of practice. THANKS for all your kind comments and support for my new adventure - the Pastry Sketch Crawl :)

Bon Appetit!

More tarte adventures today - the pastry sketch crawl continues...
It's a SNOW day in New York, so I thought I'd paint pastry at chez moi...
Last Sunday the plan was to paint onsite at Cafe Petrossian on 7th Avenue
But they were just closing so I bought the berry tarte above...
You can find candy caviar at Petrossian...
As well as the REAL thing...
You know you're in the 'Frenchie' area when you look across the street and spot La Parisienne Diner...
Then again you know you're in New York City when you get nearly run over by giant hounds...
On Monday I met a friend at another Pain Quotidien...
I thought perhaps having company onhand whilst painting might aide and abet the outcome...
No such luck malheureusement...
So today I dragged out the Petrossian tarte and went to work at home - my still life setup.
My not-so-hot results. Evidently it will take MANY tartes before I figure out how to paint these puppies. Why does that teapot look pregnant? :(
Oh dear...not there yet.
(many more attempts are required before I get the better of these %$#@ tartes. I ate this one. Vengence is mine! It was superbe)
One good thing about sketch crawling at home, I can get up and change my paint water frequently. And I can check the refrigerator contents - oh perhaps not such a good thing after all.
"Out, out damn snow!"
BONJOUR PASTRY SKETCH CRAWL CHEZ MOI!

Tuesday, January 25, 2011

Last Saturday, January 22nd there was a Sketch Crawl marathon. Groups of artists gathered in Rio, Paris, Sydney, NYC, SF, etc. and went out sketching together. Naturalement I heard about it on Sunday, the day after. C'est toujours comme ca non?
I rarely go out sketching onsite, but I decided to create my own sketch crawl, just drawing pastry in various New York tea salons...
First stop Pain Quotidien and this lush tarte framboise + a pot of mint tea.
On a cold Sunday night the joint was buzzing...
I was nervous as a cat. I set up my tiny paint boxes,
And commenced painting with my sketchbook on my lap!
Not easy at all let me tell you :(
Yikes!
The folks at the next table wanted to know if I would eventually EAT that tarte..?
It was all I could do to figure out where to place the tarte on the paper, much less think of putting it in my stomach. (I took the #$@ thing home to study and nibbled off the raspberries before any serious studying took place - c'est la vie)
Voila!
My sketches tableside at PQ...
Who could resist drawing a honey bear?
Pas moi...
Et enfin - le finished painting
The same Paris bookshop offering yesterday's baking sets had this Draw-A-Horse set in the vitrine. Oh where is the how-to-draw-a-raspberry-tarte set SVP?
Aides moi!
This is my 'January' project (and February-March until I get to Paris and can do this properly). I'm in the early warming up stages of my Pastry Sketch Crawl.
WE CAN DO THIS NON???
All moral support is most welcome
SVP!
