Yesterday I went for afternoon tea at Alice's Tea Cup on the upper west side at 102 West 73rd street.
It's the perfect place to take out-of-town guests for a lovely surprise...
The front shop of the tea salon is filled with a vast array of teas...
And tempting cakes to get you salivating...
And of course all things 'Alice' ...
You say you have nothing to wear to Alice's Tea cup? You can pick up a gown in the front shop...
Plus a pair of pink wings...
And the ever-so-essential TIARA bien sur!
No reservations accepted unless you're a party of 6+, so bring lots of children along. Your eyes will pop when you see 'The Mad Hatter' tea trays being served...
I went with PBer Frances of City Views, Country Views. *Do note her fabulously tied Frenchie scarf please - the secret how-to video is HERE!
There was no leaving the house without Monsieur BEAR, who insists he needs tea salon practice before we hit Paris...
We were both quite taken with the new Alice's Tea Cup cookbook.
The authors, Haley and Lauren Fox have THREE tea salons in New York so no wonder they needed a cookbook - very clever indeed...
And those delectably stacked tea trays - you can do them at home!
Or plan a kid's tea party just as if it was at Alice's...
Do you think they should rename New York City 'The Big Cupcake'?
We were drooling over the goodies in the cookbook...
But Frances and I settled rather sanely on the scones + pot o' tea($10). Granted the scones were insanely huge and you got a choice of TWO!
I had Mixed Berry + Pumpkin Spice and Frances went off the deepend with Caramel Banana + Mixed Berry and gobs of jam and butter.
My tea was a wonderous mix of apricot + ginger + orange + + +?!
Our neighbor (British) asked politely if she might take a closer look at M.BEAR. As an owner of four bears at home, she was instantly smitten. In fact she popped BEAR into her purse just to see if he would fit...ahem. She is returning to London shortly and BEAR mentioned he liked London a lot.
Some bears have a lot of nerve!
The idea of going home with the first person who asks?
HMPH
We did not have any Mar-Tea-Nis...
BONJOUR ALICE'S TEA CUP!

BEAR wants to go to some NEW tea salons whilst in Paris!! He says he doesn't mind going back to Carette but still... He is desperately seeking some new places...like Le Grand Opera - 13, rue Mogador 75009, where all the divine pastries are from Boulangerie Gosselin - MIAM! Bennie took this photo of Brunch at Le Paris Ritz and we are soooo tempted - the price is rather ritzy for us (120 euros). Do they charge for bears? Photo courtesy of Covered in Farine

Tea at La galerie des Gobelins at Plaza Athenee Not quite so $$$ but still pretty ritzy. Une dessert - 16 euros... Everyone is talking about Le Mini Palais salon at Avenue Winston Churchill 75008. What have you heard? An absolute MUST-do is the new Un Dimanche a Paris, Pierre Cluizel's new chocolate emporium at 4-6-8 Cour du Commerce Saint-André, 75006 Hear's a new tea joint at 95, rue St. Honore Called Tea Picture Horror. Been there, done that anyone? I've looked in the window many times but not stopped. BEAR insists this time we WILL go inside on 66 rue du cherche-midi.
Bles Sucre - we've been but never sat down for a quiet cuppa and a FAB dessert.

KAT says we MUST go to Bar Chocolat - Hotel du Cadran, 10, rue du Champs de Mars. Bien sur!
Tea at Jacques Genin - never done that but we will try Paris à l'heure des thés. Do YOU have some FAVORITE places for tea in Paris? Do Tell All SVP! ~
BONJOUR PARIS SALON DE THE!

PS

Merci Kris for Le Figaro's 10 new salon de the list.

Tea it is!
Thank you PBers for all your dynamite suggestions of what to do in London.
I'll have to go to at least 3 - 5 afternoon teas per day to keep up. I'll be drowning in tea!
You reminded me how much I love to paint teacups. And of my former addiction as a serious cup-aholic. I may soon need a cup intervention. Am I headed for the Recovery Project again?
Word out is avoid The London Ritz like the plague.
Brit Chris said, "Do not bother with tea at the Ritz, expensive and sandwiches so pre-prepared and cold they make your teeth ache."
Advice taken. I'll stick with The Paris Ritz svp.
What goes better with tea than books?
Show me a London bookshop and I'm happy as a clam. Bear is always dragging me off to W.H.Smith in Paris.
I'll be dragging Bear off to Hatchards in Piccadilly...
They have the BEST, newest art books in the world...
I've blown many $ at Waterstone's - with every how-to watercolor book under the sun...though I probably could write my own by now. Nevermind...
Just a hop and a skip from the Chelsea Arts Club too.
La Seine Miniatures reminded me...One of my favourite places is "Books for Cooks" in Notting Hill (books and cookery classes).
4 Blenheim Crescent, Notting Hill, London, W11 1NN
It's been ages since I've visited... The V&A museum bookshop is not-to-be-missed...
Did I miss any of your favorite London bookshops?
Do tell svp.
BONJOUR MONDAY!

Monday, May 3, 2010

You're terribly late you know...Naughty!"
said The Mad Hatter.

It's true I am late...late posting today
And I never got to the Alice Tea Party at Rizzoli because I was painting up a storm here trying to catch up. Thank you Grace for posting on The Real Alice in Wonderland book signing. I thought I'd show you Alice at Printemps instead today...

You could look down from the escalators on the big Mad Hatters tea party going on at Printemps ground floor - not very private indeed!

*Note on the facing wall behind the tea table...

All these exquisite...
Alice still life setups...
Perfect for painting...
Perfect for eating...well just perfect. As I was stealthfully tiptoeing around in my best Sherlockian mode, nabbing shots to show you, I heard my name called out,
"CAROLLLLLLLLLLLLL"

Was I about to be arrested..?
It was Biscuit Bear (aka Helene) and her daughter, Puni, attendees at the big tea table who spotted me.
We met on Flickr sometime ago and I loved this picture of Puni wearing the dress from the Marie-Antoinette exhibit...
Helene and Puni showed me this Alice book in the tea salon. It's a book within a book...well many books.
I realize I haven't shown you a single macaron today.
Simply shocking!
The green "Alice" music box was once full of macarons...sigh
Now I must get back to painting...
Doesn't this look like a modern-day Alice lost in Laduree wonderland? Wanna trade places with her on this very wet Monday?
I DO!
Jeanne sent me her painted version of "Alice" - Your lovely post of Alice and Puni reminded me that my recent painting of my granddaughter Carlie seemed to somehow emanate Alice as well. Maybe with the current movie, Alice is in our collective consciousness.

A Brazilian Alice made by PBer Heloisa...isn't she enchanting?
