Pierre Herme Cherry Strusel Tarte, watercolor, 9" x 11"
Normally I wouldn't have picked out the strusel-covered tarte at Pierre Herme, but Amy and I had discussed having a 'crumble' taste test at Les Deux Abeilles so the rest is history. Then yesterday I popped into Dorie Greenspan's delicious blog and what was she chatting about? Pierre Herme's strusel-covered tarte with a recipe to boot. Some times the stars are aligned and you just have to go with the flow. No use fighting it. So that's how the strusel tarte became the star of the today's show.. As it happens I took a shot of the tarte before gobbeling it down Sunday a week ago - I mostly forget to do this. I sent it over to Dorie and she said it made her day! M. says cherries/cerise = June/juin
This being the last day of June it seems appropriate to do an homage of sorts to cherries...

This is also an homage to M.'s glorious tea pot or rather the Japanese tetsubin that I love to paint. The French are crazy for these cast iron tea pots and they've been crazy for a while. When the French pick up on something they don't let go. Unlike us flighty americains I have to say. We get all passionate for a while and then we drop it and go onto the next big thing. Not the French!
I'm still crazy for Japanese woodblock prints and it's been going on for a while, so maybe I do have a soupcon of Frenchiness in moi? I hope so...
These elegant and rather delicate drawings are a great source of inspiration for me...
I never tire of looking at them...
I did buy a Tetsubin down on Grand Street in New York and not a very pretty one at that. I don't think I've ever painted it It's a bit clutsy isn't it :(
Why I didn't buy one just like M.s' I'll never know? This shop is near the Odeon Metro stop or it used to be...
There are slew of Japanese tetsubin and they do happen to have M.s' tea pot in TWO colors no less, at the Mariage Freres department in Printemps!
Why didn't I bring one home? Go figure...granted they weigh a ton.
They've got all of Mariage Freres teas too. You could happily spend days in just this department. Well I could, browsing to my hearts content...
If you've been lucky enough to take tea at Mariage Freres, you'll know they bring this giant book to the table for you to study up on which tea you'd like to taste, it's origins bla bla bla. Now you can find it on Amazon and have it at home as a doorstop or if you love tea, you'll want to read it bien sur.
Admittedly this has been rather a meandering post. From tarts to teas to Dorie and Amy and whatever... If you would like to taste the tarte I painted today, hop over to Dorie's for the recipe. It's a lot closer than going to Paris...
Me, I'm rushing out to get the last of the June cherries or maybe that's only in Paris. This is New York after all...
BONJOUR Tarte croustillante aux cerises et aux pistaches!

Sunday morning in Paris is perfect to go foraging for desserts. You must start early. M and I leave by 9:30 am joining the joggers and dog walkers. While Paris sleeps you'll catch all the best desserts that got away all week, when you walzed in the late afternoon to find zilch... A Paris restaurant 'guard' cat watches us as we go off to forage... Gerard Mulot is always buzzing with activity on Sunday from dessert foragers... I'm looking for desserts to shoot and later paint... Never easy at Mulot - too many to choose from... Ah ha! This chocolate dome will do the trick. I send off M. with the booty while I head on for more treasures. She has instructions to carry the desserts gingerly... Laduree's vitrines are full of springy colors and flowers to honor the new macaron flavor, Mimosa. Mine is resting in the freezer...

And the newest dainty coffret/box to hold the macarons - the adorable Madame Pomador box.
Why do I always feel like this 5-year old inside Laduree Bonaparte, full of excitement and anticipation..? I manage to walk away with THREE cupcakes!
Sunday brunch awaits some lucky late sleepers...
I head off to Pierre Herme on rue Bonaparte. The windows are impossible to shoot, full of reflections. And photographing inside is now strictly verboten. I have a plane to catch on Monday so...
One last pit stop for the elusive sesame eclair at patisserie Sadaharu Aoki. It's M.'s birthday and she must have a sesame eclair bien sur!
Back at the apartment I photograph like mad in the beautiful overcast morning light. Pierre Herme's Cherry Pistachio tarte looks an awful lot like M.'s bumpy Japanese tetsubin teapot.
But the PH cerise/cherry comes in handy as a prop for the other setups...
Laduree's pistache cupcake + cerise... The other two patiently await their turn. I've never been an eater of cupcakes, but suddenly I'm converted. I wolf down the citron, naturally only after shooting...
Later I meet up with Amy of Sweet Freak at Carette's newest tea salon in the Marais at 25, Place des Voges...
It's impossible to eat even one bite of Amy's clafoutis.
I'm desserted out.
Still, can you think of a better way to spend a Sunday in Paris?
I'm back in New York, unpacking, paying bills, and heading out to the pool to work off that citron cupcake!
BONJOUR DIMANCHE!

Paris window chaise,watercolor, 5.5" x 7.5"
Another Paris night walk since you enjoyed yesterdays post so much adn I am still busy now with the Jack Russells... There's nothing like strolling around Paris at night... You have all the windows to yourself... And you can redecorate entirely to your heart's content - like this inviting chair in a rare bookshop window.. Oh those trecherous, unending circular staircases in Paris! I'll take a mini model instead S.V.P. Bouquets of everlasting coral - perfection! Parisien children's shops at night are full of stories - a sad child neglected by teddy parents...dommage A little snack for your night time journey..? A few cerises peut-etre? Crunch...crunch At last! Bisquits...quelle dommage - made of porcelaine=no calories! My walk from the Right bank over to the Left bank. Que Voltaire is particularly good for enticing antique boutiques for the vicarious shopper.
BONJOUR PARIS NIGHT WALKS!

A ParisBreakfasts reader requested a birthday-macaron watercolor.
Natch I had to throw in a cherry/cerise...
My 2 favorite things to paint = macarons + cherries!
I could paint cherries all day long...
I could eat cherries all day long...
Who couldn't?
La Fille Du Consul Cerises necklaceYesteday in the mail arrived this cherry necklace I ordered from La Fille du Consul!
Now I'll have beautiful cherry models even when the season ends.
Spoons are another good painting subject -
they add that bit of essential shine...
Pierre Herme macaron doodlesMacarons are the perfect geometric shape to draw and paint.
Some macarons are more geometrically fun to paint than others...
I counted in my Flickr pictures - They said;
We found 21 results for
your photos matching CHERRIES.
We found 32 results for
your photos matching macarons
This is my favorite macaron picture.
I never even went inside :(
But I think I remember where it is...
Next trip in October, I promise to take a good look and report back the details!
Matching macaron colors...
I could do this all day long :)

Back to painting macarons and cherries...
