Do you eat Chinese when in Paris?
It probably isn't the first choice that comes to mind, but M. loves this place so I give it a whirl for lunch (they're only open for lunch by the way). It is just down from Pierre Herme atLa Maison de la Chine - 76, rue Bonaparte - 75006 Paris - Métro Saint-Sulpice
Lun - Sam / 10h - 19h
I always like to study the menu outside...
Even though I tend to eat the same thing no matter where I am. In London I lived on crawfish sandwiches at Pret A Manger daily and here I got the crawfish salad. Go figure? It's VERY important to notice the 'OU' when you're getting the formule in France. Basically it means a first course + a main (which is what most French people get), OR a main + a dessert. Being American and piggy I got all 3 courses, though I had not intended to. C'est la vie.
The salon de the is really inside the Shanghai Tang boutique...
And it's very serene too. One must keep an eye out for the occasional dose of serenity when tearing around Paris non?
I don't know why I bother looking at menus but it is irresistable...
Quite chic decor...
A tiny amuse bouche arrives with the green tea...
An interesting dessert - I'm still not sure what this is but it sounded nice and tasted very nice. Rose de Shanghai, crème légère avec coulis de framboise et concassée de pistaches. If you know what I ate, do tell svp.
After lunch it's fun to admire all the gorgeous merch at Shanghai Tang. Daily Connoisseur reminded me of this place, when she mentioned owner, Sir David Tang's fab etiquette columns in FT. Very useful indeed, if you want to know whether to request a doggy bag at the London Savoy etc... Labels: M., Pierre Herme, rue Bonaparte

Wake up Parisiens!
Some Parisiens are awake and testing out their winnings dans la rue...
Bear heads for the PH Trocadero. Bear is having a heart attack from all this mad macaron chasing around Paris.
Bear is getting to know the Paris Metro awfully well...hmmm
WTF...
Enfin the 58 avenue Paul Doumer Pierre Herme!
Inside Bear grows impatient as 2 very large boxes of macarons are filled.
In fact 2 Parisiens have won the contest and hit all 6 Pierre Hermes! They are doing a small dance of joie! Bear heads home for lunch, with big plans to continue the contest after eating.
French Girl has made an exquisite salade de Lentille with saumon fume. Bear immediately launches into his adventures pursuing the PH macarons.
Bear has to backtrack to the first 2 destinations and get the stamps on his mac card. Then he heads to FINAL Pierre Herme desitination, Galeries Lafayette. It's about 4 pm and the line is longish. Bear is humming gayly to himself.
Doodly-doodly-do...
Some mac lovers are napping on line exhausted from waiting, but Bear stays fully wide-awake and praying the macs will not be finished by the time he gets to the counter...
French Girl reminds Bear that this is The American Way, to sit down to a meal and talk business, business, business.
The French Way is to talk cuisine, cuisine, cuisine.
Oh...Bear shuts his trap.
Doodly-doodly-do...
mon dieu!
Bear wins!
Bear goes for 1 of each of 25 flavors + whatever.
Bear can not believe his good fortune!!!
Bear's FAB dance card with all of the stamps from each
Bear can not believe his good fortune!!!
Very lovely non?
What's even more lovely is Pierre Herme's amazing generosity on this day. Not only is a charity remembered and given it's due, but the people of Paris get a chance to taste these fantastic cookies. There are many kids on line, who normally would not be able to buy such a deluxe dessert but Jour du Macaron is their chance to partake and enjoy.
BONJOUR PIERRE HERME et BIG MERCI!!!

OK PB readers..it's been a while since we immersed ourselves in a Paris patisserie. And Pierre Herme has a new collection out.A little history group. I hope you have your pencils poised.
You will be tested end of term!
The St. Honoré Cake, is a richly decorated cake named after Saint Honore, the seventh-century Bishop of Amiens, and the French patron saint of pastry chefs and bakers. (WOW!) Pastry chef Chiboust is rumoured to have created it in his Paris shop in 1846. It consists of a pâte brisée base with a pâte a choux ring around the outside. Individual pâte a choux puffs are filled with pastry cream and dipped in caramel. They are then attached on top of the outside ring of the cake with more caramel to hold them in place. The Gateau St. Honore is also known as the "Ball Cake" because of the little caramel-covered pastry balls surrounding the top of the cake.
Saint Honoré Satine
Très frais,
Très frais,
très parfumé,
entre acidulé et sucré
(a rough translation=very fresh, very perfumed, between acidic and sweet. French sounds so much better doesn't it?)
Swoon...
