Let's Bake!
And the French make it so much easier!
French bookstores provide a gazillion ways to bake a cake or a macaron or a cupcake ....
Isn't this the funnist idea you ever came accross?
Soupes, blinis et cocottes are provided too...
Of course the ever-present MACARON comes in a box and I bought it. Not that I ever bake but who could resist? And they were selling this in the gift shop at the musee des arts decoratif no less!? Go figure.
The box includes a special thermometer and the whole shebang with recipe book and nozzles is not $$$. Just a mere 12 euros I think...
You can easily pick up these cook'in box books at Amazon.Fr. True the shipping is highish (almost the same as the book in you live in the US anyway) but that's still not so bad in my opinion...
Madeleines anyone?
So many gateaux...mini and big...Labels: CUPCAKES, gateaux, macarons, musee des arts decoratif

I'll be in London for 5 whole days next month! Can you think of a better way to fight off a cold at present than research future cake places? I can't..
I've been pouring over Shop Image Graphics in London for clues...It says I must go to Aubaine - have you been?
And what about Peyton and Byrne? Do advise svp!
Your advice is the BEST you know :)
Primrose Bakery in Covent Garden is looking awfully tempting too...Ah decisions, decisions...
We've been to Hummingbird Cupcakes so we can cross that off the list...
Isn't this a delectable macaron cake stand to die for at La Maison du Chocolat on Piccadilly? Though we have visited many times in NYC and Paris...hmmm
Carluccio's is not strictly cakes but very appealing and nearby on Fullham road so I will pop in for sure...
Look! Faux gateaux at Liberty's or was it Fornum & Masons?
What about an elegant china teapot to display your cookies? The British are awfully fond of their cakes aren't they :)
I like these macaron displays as well in Fortnum's windows...Or would you prefer lingering over afternoon tea at the divine Sketch Tea Parlour? Thank you dear PBer for telling me about THIS place! Have you got others hidden up your sleeves I must not miss?

Time for a little dessert isn't it? Like the famous l'opera gateaux.I keep thinking about pastry geometrie...
This cake was first created by Louis Clichy in 1903.
But Dalloyau renamed it after the grand Paris Opera
and is reknown for their version.
Every French patisserie makes a version of this popular multi-layered chocolate decadence. L'Epicerie has a monster version...
I would love to figure out why a squared cake in the US connotes an
office party birthday? Where is the panache? Where's the ganache?
Pierre Herme makes what looks like an opera cake but he changes the equation. It's called the Carrement Chocolat, it is not layered.
Inside is: (biscuit "molleux chocolat", creme onctueuse au chocolat, mousse au chocolat, fine feuilles de chocolat craquant) I see the word feuille / leaves, so it must be layered? I brought the petit four version home to paint...
There's nothing like the challenge of painting a square object on a rectangular piece of paper.
If you think you'd like to make this cake, Dorie Greenspan has documented Dalloyau's recipe in her book, Paris Sweets. Here's what's inside those layers:
1.Giaconda biscuit
2.Coffee syrup
3.Coffee buttercream
4.Chocolate ganache
5.Chocolate glaze
Not exactly "a piece of cake" to make!
