Disgraced former governor of Imo State, Ikedi Ohakim, today hurriedly handed power over to his successor, Rochas Okorocha, in Owerri. The impromptu ceremony took place about 2 :00 PM Nigetrian time.

Ohakim later drove to the airport and arrived in Lagos, where he was sighted at the Arik Airline office in Ikeja.  He was reportedly negotiating to hire a chartered flight to escape from Nigeria before Sunday, when his immunity expires.

A large cache of assorted arms buried by Biafran soldiers during the 30-month Nigeria/Biafra war, which ended in 1970, has been found at Saint Patrick’s Secondary School, Ogbe, Ahiara, Ahiazu Mbaise local council area of Imo State.

The shocking discovery included rifles, ammunition of various calibers, conventional live mortar bombs and the famous locally made Ogbunigwe and Ojukwu Buckets.
Already,  out-going Imo State governor, Chief Ikedi Ohakim, has described the discovery as “not only shocking but also clear evidence that some areas of the state remain unsafe for human habitation”.

Ohakim, who was reacting during an interview in Owerri, said he was optimistic that the Federal Ministry of Defence will do everything possible to make the war-ravaged states safe for human habitation and activities.

Vanguard gathered that a native of Ahiara, Mr. Cajethan Ndulaka, who raised the alarm, recalled that he was still a student of Saint Patrick’s Secondary School when the landmines, bombs, rifles, ammunition and other explosive remnants of the war were buried.

It was equally gathered that as at the time of going to press, no fewer than 68 types of mortar bombs had been recovered from the dumps located in the school.

“There are other arms dump sites in and around the school compound. These dangerous ordinances were buried in the college compound to prevent accidental explosion that would have killed the students,” Ndulaka recalled.

Noting that the villagers did not know that the unexploded ordinances were potential threat to the lives of the students, even as they were buried in the school compound, Ndulaka also recalled that the school served as a barrack for Biafran soldiers.

“The school served as a barrack for Biafran Army engineers, who made and stockpiled arms and ammunition in the school during the war.”

Following reports that the outgoing governor of Imo State, Ikedi Ohakim, is lobbying President Goodluck Jonathan to make him a minister, a group has called on the president  not to appoint Ohakim as minister.

The group, League of Okigwe Professionals (LOP), comprising of Ohakim's kinsmen, warned that such a development would amount to Jonathan endorsing the "governor’s woeful performance in the state".
Ohakim, who was the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lost his bid for a second term in office to Rochas Okorocha, of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA), in the just concluded
general elections.

According to the group, in a statement, "after the disgraceful ouster of Ohakim by Imo people as a result of non-performance and greed, the outgoing governor should for now disappear from public domain."

The statement, which was jointly signed by Rev. Fr. Jerome Nwokere (Okigwe LGA), Pastor Jones Umunna (Onuimo), Mr. Ohams Jonas, (Isiala Mbano), Nze Odika Iwu (Ehime Mbano), Rev. George Anyanwu (Ihitte-Uboma), and Mr. Charles Ala (Obowo), said that it was "disgraceful for Ohakim to be scheming to be appointed a minister after he wasted the opportunity the people of the state gave him to write his name in gold".

"With the dismal performance of Mr. Ohakim as governor of the state, there is no justification for the outgoing governor to aspire for a ministerial appointment," stated the group.

LOP also pointed out that it is laughable for Ohakim, who they claimed facilitated the sack of the Interior Minister, Captain Emmanuel Iheanacho, for failing to deliver his senatorial zone, to now be lobbying to be made a minister after losing the entire state.

Also, the group stated that it was an irony of fate that Ohakim was now begging for job from the same President Jonathan whom, they claimed, he wanted to displace as vice president during the administration of late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.

“When everybody in Nigeria was clamouring for the then Vice President Jonathan to be made acting president to move the country forward, Ohakim hired touts and urchins to demonstrate in support of then ailing President Yar A’dua," the group stated.

“Rather than continue to put Okigwe zone to shame, Ohakim should take a sabbatical so that his many sins would be forgotten by Imo people with the passage of time."

Youth of the community, on learning that the governor and his family were billed for a special church service at the St. Michael’s Anglican Church, Okohia the home parish of the governor, stormed the church smashing windows. They drove away the priests who were supposed to officiate the church service.

They barricaded the church insisting that the governor would not be allowed to attend any church service in the area. The youth, numbering about 50 wanted the governor to explain what he did for his immediate community during his reign as the chief executive of the state.

The Chief of Staff, Emma Ohakim, was said to have gone to the church to intervene in the matter but the youth remained adamant. They challenged him to point to any benefit the community got from the administration. The church service was aborted.

Yesterday, the group assembled again to continue with the protest but security operatives were swiftly deployed to the area to quell the action.
