Turns out that the reality TV mavens over at TLC aren't just bringing My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding over from the UK—they've also started airing the series about gypsies and travelers in the United States.
According to census reports, there is an estimated population of 1 million gypsies and travelers living in the US—mostly dispersed through the south. "The series will be revealing the everyday lives and the age-old customs that make up their family and social dynamics," says the release. "With unprecedented access, viewers are invited into these tightly knit communities and follow as they throw elaborate celebrations—including weddings that last for days—and how they interact with the society outside of their own."
TLC began airing the UK edition of My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding—renamed for the American market as Big Fat Gypsy Weddings- yesterday May 29th with seven episodes scheduled to air through the summer. The American edition is likely to reach the small screen in early 2012.
